What is CBT?

I am a trained CBT therapist. You may be wondering what that is. Let me explain!

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ( CBT) is a type of talk therapy that helps you change the way you think and behave in order to feel better.

Our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are all connected. Our feelings can sometimes feel out of our control or unmanageable, especially when dealing with issues such as anxiety or depression . CBT focuses on thinking and behavioral patterns that exacerbate these feelings. Negative or unhelpful thoughts and behaviors can trap you in vicious cycles of feeling down.

As your therapist I will teach you tools on how to recognize these thinking and behavior traps and make changes. Eventually you will be able to do this on your own and essentially be your own CBT therapist! CBT does generally involve some homework for best outcomes. This typically includes practicing the tools you will learn learn in therapy on your own. We all know that change takes time. What happens in our weekly sessions is important but what will help generate the change in your problematic thinking and behavioral patterns is your commitment towards practicing these new tools in day-to-day life. Don’t worry, we will review and troubleshoot together until you feel confident in your abilities.

CBT is an evidenced based practice that can help with a variety of issues. My training and experience includes treatment for anxiety, depression, ADHD, psychosis and trauma. If you are interested in CBT therapy in California, feel free to reach out for a free consultation to see if I am the right therapist for you!
